Kuseni Energy provide & distribute affordable off-grid solar energy solutions mainly aimed at the bottom of the pyramid (‘BOP’) communities in Zambia & Southern Africa. Kuseni aims to deliver “radical affordability” across three axes: initial purchase price; total cost of ownership; & flexibility of expenditures over time. A census conducted in 2010 found the total population of Zambia to be 13,046,508, consisting of 2,635,590 households. According to the Energy Regulation Board of Zambia (‘ERB’) 2013-14 Statistics Bulletin there are 568,699 households and 42,603 commercial and small scale users consuming electricity from the grid. Combined data from two complimentary surveys, the Zambia Business Survey (‘ZBS,2008’) and the World Bank Enterprise Survey (‘WBES,2008’) database, shows that there are about 12 million informal micro and small enterprises (‘MSMEs’) in Zambia, along with about 30,000 formal MSMEs. The data also shows that vast majority of these “businesses” are very small with only 15% of them earning revenues greater than US$200 per month; less than 8% have revenues more than US$400 per month. Clearly the data above shows that circa 2million households and 1million MSMEs do not consume electricity from the grid. International charity Solar Aid’s primary research (2012-15) on Zambia, found that BOP families were spending an average US$75 per year on lighting, equivalent to 9% of household income for 4 hours of light at night. An article published in the Lusaka Times on 27th January 2016 estimates that there are 10.9 million mobile phone subscribers in Zambia who clearly require a source of power to charge their phones. This presents a significant opportunity for Kuseni to connect most Zambian households and MSME’s to a radically affordable, reliable and renewable source of electricity.
